The Volunteer Web is a complete volunteering platform that enables users to find and arrange volunteering opportunities at NGOs based on their interests without tedious phone calls, tiresome Google searches or anything of the sort. It all started back in 2015, when we wanted to volunteer with NGOs whose objectives echoed ours, but found it difficult to find any that matched our interests and abilities easily. Our knowledge of the opportunities we had were limited to those that we knew of through contacts: friends, family and the like. We were feeling the lack of an efficient system to connect us to NGOs - we simply wanted to volunteer without running from pillar to post! We conducted a survey to get an idea of how many people wish to volunteer Vs. how many actually do so. Our survey confirmed our suspicion. Over 90% of all individuals are extremely interested in volunteering at NGOs. However, a mere 15% have actually volunteered at an NGO, and of that 15% only 8% to do so regularly - usually if their school or organisation offers such avenues. Our survey further showed that nearly 70% of all people who haven't ever volunteered at an NGO, found the cumbersome process of contacting NGOs themselves, a major deterrent because unless they had contacts, it was close to impossible to volunteer anywhere. We believed that creating a platform to connect NGOs with prospective volunteers would immensely improve the situation, by allowing volunteers to find causes they were interested in, as well help NGOs find people genuinely concerned with their cause. Since then, we have found a few platforms that attempted to match NGOs with volunteers. The drawback was that they stopped there, leaving the system still incomplete. We realised that even though the platforms helped volunteers find NGOs, they left much of the organising and negotiating to be done outside the website, resulting in several calls by the website’s owners to the NGOs to make the volunteering a reality. The idea soon evolved into developing an integrated platform that attempts to encompass all the stages of planning, executing and reflecting on the volunteering experience. The Volunteer Web: Helps individuals find relevant and interesting NGOs Allows individuals to schedule their volunteering in just a few clicks Allows NGOs to respond (accept/reject) the requests to volunteer Thus automating the entire system. The site also allows: NGOs to create short-term ‘events’ and long-term ‘projects’ - that they require extra volunteers for apart from their day-to-day activities NGOs to better manage themselves by creating an NGO Management System which can be used to log expenses, donations, and offline volunteering instances - for greater transparency and efficiency We truly believe that we can help improve the logistical issues behind volunteering at NGOs, making it much easier to make a significant difference about issues we care about.
